Humanitarian Affairs UK is a member of the World Association of Non-governmental Organisations and the World Alliance for Citizen Participation. In partnership with the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Humanitarian Affairs UK will host the seventh annual University Scholars Leadership Symposium in Hanoi, Vietnam, this August.

In 2016, the theme for the event is Inspiring Individuals, Transforming Communities.

The symposium is a week-long leadership development training program that aims to inspire young leaders to develop their skills, and to educate students about solutions to current humanitarian issues. It brings together annually, in the heart of developing Asia, over 1,000 of the world’s most promising young minds. Activities are creatively planned to help participants discover their hidden potential for affecting global change, and to actively engage them in learning experiences beyond the conference rooms.

Delegates this year will be be able to acquire robust confidence and improve their goal-setting capabilities, self-reliance, independence and other qualities essential to becoming a 21st century leader, through a variety of lectures, discussions and other activities.

Highlights include presentations from a number of internationally-renowned speakers, including American Nobel Peace Prize finalist Tim Peters, several TED Talk speakers, and well-regarded founders of accomplished international NGOs. Delegates will also have the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice by getting involved in workshops offered by several UN agencies, and can take part in the Learning Journey, a day where delegates will do fieldwork in the local communities around Hanoi.

Applying to become a delegate

Applicants need to be aged 18-30 and interested students must apply by completing an online form and paying a US$30.00 administration fee via PayPal at the time of application.

All applications are screened and successful applicants will be chosen by a selection committee. Essentially, the committee will be looking for students who:

  • demonstrate strong leadership potential and a commitment to effecting positive change across the globe
  • show a genuine appreciation for different perspectives
  • are from a range of different backgrounds, who have varying interests and ambitions

Successful applicants will have the administration fee deducted from their delegate registration fees at the time of payment. For unsuccessful applicants, the administration fee, minus PayPal charges, will be refunded.

Applications can be submitted through until June.

Delegate registration, fees and costs to participate

Successful applicants will receive an official response from the selection committee within 3 to 5 working days of application date and need to confirm their symposium attendance by paying the full applicable delegate registration fee within 14 days of receiving notification. Delegate registration fees range from US$650.00 to US$990.00 per person, depending on the chosen registration package and date of registration.

For successful applicants, the early bird delegate registration deadline (offering slightly discounted fees) is 31 March. The final deadline for registration (at full price) is 22 July.

Delegates are responsible for their own airfares and travel costs to and from the symposium location in Vietnam. (Note: Monash students who successfully apply to attend the symposium may be eligible for a small stipend from Monash Abroad to help cover some costs.
