About the symposium

Humanitarian Affairs, a member of the World Association of Non-governmental Organisations and the World Alliance for Citizen Participation, presents the 4th annual University Leadership Symposium, to be held in Manila, The Philippines, from 1 to 7 August 2013.

The symposium is an international humanitarian leadership programme where university students can learn about, explore and address global concerns about the plight of those suffering in extreme poverty. It is endorsed by the United Nations Department of Social Affairs and the United Nations Youth Unit in New York.

This year's event will bring together over 1,000 students from leading universities worldwide to discuss issues pertaining to humanitarian matters and sustainable development. The program will also include training sessions on leadership and communication, project management and implementation, lectures from expert humanitarians such as Robin Lim (CNN Hero of the Year, 2011) and Australia’s Geraldine Cox (Founder of Sunrise Children’s Village, Cambodia), as well as hands-on service learning activities at a local community.

Applying to become a delegate

Interested students must apply by completing an online form and paying a US$30.00 administration fee via PayPal.

All applications will be screened and successful applicants chosen by a selection committee. The committee is likely to look for students who demonstrate:

  • strong leadership potential
  • a genuine appreciation for different perspectives and individuals with different backgrounds, interests and ambitions
  • consideration for others and an interest in serving society
Successful applicants will have the administration fee deducted from their delegate registration fees at the time of payment. For unsuccessful applicants, the administration fee, minus PayPal charges, will be refunded.

Early applicants who are successful are eligible for discounted delegate registration fees until 31 May.

Delegate registration fees and costs to participate

Successful applicants will receive an official response from the selection committee within 3 to 5 working days of application date and need to confirm their symposium attendance by paying the applicable registration fee within 14 days of receiving notification.

Fees range from US$350.00 to US$850.00 per person, depending on when you book and pay and what registration package you choose. Some options include accommodation and meals, as well as participation in the symposium program. Delegates are also responsible for their own airfares and travel costs to and from the symposium location in Manila, The Philippines. (Note: Monash students who are chosen to attend the symposium may be eligible for a stipend from Monash Abroad. To enquire about this, contact monash.abroad@monash.edu.)

Note that failure to make registration payment in full within 14 days may be taken to mean you have withdrawn your application and the initial US$30.00 administration fee paid may, in this instance, be forfeited. Conditions also apply if you pay the delegate registration fee and then wish to cancel your registration.
